There was much to see from HP at Tech Forum in Las Vegas, but we wanted to highlight some of the smaller companies exhibiting there. Two in particular caught our attention: Silentium, with their noise-reducing server racks, and QLogic’s entry-level Fibre Channel switches.

You’ve probably heard VMware virtualization and storage talk about VAAI (vStorage API for Array Integration. If you’ve listened to episode 4 of VIRTUMANIA or watched the recent video from the vExpert Panel session at the Carolina VMUG Summit then you’ve heard me talk about it with some of those most in the know on the topic. But what is VAAI exactly and how will it impact virtualization in the future?

We were pleased to be invited to attend HP’s annual Tech Forum event, held in Las Vegas on June 21-24, 2010. Among the many announcements made by HP, the massive DL980 and new blade servers stood out, along with the StorOnce data deduplication technology. Since not everyone could attend this event, we recorded some video from the show floor to give a feeling of being there.

I try and avoid licensing at all costs, it’s a horrible subject and one that strikes fear in to many. When you add virtualisation in to the mix it tends to get a little more complicated and you often find that the rules change on a reasonably regular basis. I was involved in a discussion today about Citrix XenDesktop and an interesting point came up when discussing licensing Virtual PCs. Someone mentioned something called the Microsoft VDA, I hadn’t a clue what they were talking about so I did a little digging around to find out more.

The new operating system (OS) requirements mean we will see even more instances of vCenter as a VM (virtual machine).
