A great and insightful comment, Dan! I agree that Atmos could be a Centera killer in the future if EMC would only add compliance capabilities. But they're not there yet!

Interesting, though not unexpected move by EMC. Given that the cloud storage service provider market with massive capacity is fairly limited for Atmos, they need a way to monetize it. Simply makes sense to try and create a complete cloud capability to leverage their own technology similar to Amazon S3 and EC2. The unfortunate aspect of their need to protect existing product lines in storage is that they're not pushing the real innovation of atmos and an emerging segment for object-based storage. This is the technology that is well suited for cloud storage services as well as for infrastructure to support large content repositories within oranizations. DDN launched their object storage (WOS) in direct competition to Atmos, but for the cloud. My opinion is that object-based storage has a much broader market appeal. Of course, they're working to protect Centera though I'd think companies like Caringo will see opportunity to address archiving/content repositories/cloud with a single product. Simplifies the IT storage environment and I'd think EMC would get this, especially given today's budgetary constraints and economic climate.
