If databases are set to be the next big land grab for the public cloud, it’s unsurprising to see Amazon positioning themselves to dominate. Look no further than their recently announced MongoDB-compatible database-as-a-service offering Amazon DocumentDB.
Chris Evans does a great job breaking down the implications and use cases for this. He rightly points out that Microsoft has and will not stand still in competition. But depending on your existing IT deployment, that may be an apples-to-oranges comparison to a certain extent. Google’s play in this space remains an open question. As Chris points out, this will come down to “features, functionality and ease of use.” Amazon certainly has the resources to iterate on all three simultaneously.
