Announcements from AWS re:Inforce | Gestalt IT Rundown: June 19, 2024

Amazon Web Services recently held their re:Inforce conference, as the company attempts to partner with customers to deliver a secure environment. Following the shared responsibility model concept that was the focus last year, it seems that the company is emphasizing that security is a job for everyone in the modern cloud. We also saw product announcements from AWS, including enhancements to Nitro that control access to the underlying infrastructure.

Veeam recently hosted customers and analysts at VeeamON, announcing a shift in their enterprise strategy. The data protection company is modifying their product strategy to focus more on cyber-resiliency and incident response following the acquisition of Coveware. And they are embracing the new enterprise IT world, following Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware and the announcement of Copilot+ PCs.

6:21 – Enthusiasm for AI in the Enterprise is Waning

According a recent study by Lucidworks, the initial excitement surrounding generative AI has diminished as companies realize just how hard it is to deploy and take advantage of the technology. The 2024 Generative AI Global Benchmark Study shows that organizations are encountering challenges moving beyond the pilot stage as well as the high cost and low impact of AI projects.

10:44 – Microsoft to Improve Security after Recall Delay

Microsoft has postponed the launch of its Windows Recall feature, initially planned for Copilot+ PCs, due to security and privacy concerns raised by experts. The feature captured screenshots and cataloged text at regular intervals to help users find past activities on their PCs, has prompted worries about the potential exposure of sensitive information but was widely criticized by privacy and security advocates.

14:16 – Oracle, Microsoft, and OpenAI Join Forces

Oracle, Microsoft, and OpenAI have joined forces to integrate Microsoft Azure AI with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). The trio bolster capacity for OpenAI, which can leverage Oracle Gen2 AI infrastructure to support end-user AI applications.

17:33 – Pure Storage Confirms Unauthorized Access

Pure Storage confirmed that a third party gained unauthorized access to a Snowflake data analytics workspace containing telemetry information used for customer support. The exposed data included company names, LDAP usernames, email addresses, and software version numbers, but did not include sensitive information such as passwords or customer-stored data. Pure Storage immediately blocked further access, but this is just the latest Snowflake-related breach.

Google Cloud presented at Cloud Field Day 20 last week, and the company provided a comprehensive overview of their enterprise cloud offerings, emphasizing the platform’s global reach and robust, planet-scale capabilities. The presentation showed Google’s comprehensive offerings, from security, storage, and networking to Cloud Run, which enables workloads to be easily run in the cloud. We also got deep dives into Vertex, GKE, and more.
