Pat Moorhead and Daniel Newman sat down with Sam Burd to discuss AI PCs at Dell Tech World. These new PCs include significant new AI integrations, and Dell expects these to initiate a “super cycle” of PC upgrades. We discussed the importance of Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite earlier in the program, but what should we make of the market for AI PCs? This and more announcements from Dell Tech World on The Rundown.
1:00 – Dell Writes a HYCU in their PowerProtect DataDomain
We’ve been enthusiastic about HYCU’s data protection capabilities for a while, but there’s a new twist today. Dell announced that HYCU can write directly to PowerProtect DataDomain, giving joint customers a high-performance pipeline for their data with DD Boost. HYCU is also integrated into Dell Azure Stack HCI and Azure Stack Hub.

3:36 – GitHub Patches Massive Security Hole in Enterprise Servers
A GitHub exploit? Ten out of ten. No notes. Well, except for the patch notes. GitHub released a patch to prevent their SAML SSO system. The exploit allowed full admin access to anyone that was able to forge a response token. Ironically, exploit is only enabled for servers running the more secure encrypted assertions options. The bug was found through the GitHub Bug Bounty program which could net the finder up to $30,000 in compensation for such a massive security flaw.

6:45 – Palo Alto Networks Acquires IBM QRadar
Palo Alto Networks just landed on IBM’s radar. Or, more appropriately, they just bought IBM’s QRadar. The solution includes the EDR offering, X-Force Threat Intelligence, Security Orchestration, and Randori Recon. The move comes as IBM seeks to divest non-core lines of business after the HashiCorp acquisition was announced. Palo Alto will be migrating QRadar users to Cortex platforms and integrating the software assets into their platforms. Also announced was a deal that would see IBM reselling Palo Alto security offerings.

10:35 – Exabeam and LogRhythm to Merge to Strengthen AI-Driven Security Future
Two of the biggest SIEM vendors are merging. Exabeam and LogRhythm have announced they are joining forces to take on the bigger players in the security incident and event management space. After the huge news that Cisco was buying Splunk the rest of the market has faced pressure to consolidate. This merger will see two vendors that were head-to-head previously now be brought under a single banner. Analysts are bullish on the combined company but see troubles ahead as they try to integrate their various product lines.
14:00 – PC Makers Debut AI PCs with Microsoft CoPilot+
During Microsoft Build this week, just about every major PC maker introduced a CoPilot+ PC. CoPilot+ is a combination of hardware and software that enables AI processing locally on-device using NPUs. This includes Recall, which we will talk about in a moment, as well as AI-assisted art generation and editing. But these features only work with an NPU, and the only NPU today comes from Qualcomm and uses an Arm core.

19:36 – CoPilot+ Totally Recalls Everything
One of the key features of these new CoPilot+ PCs is Recall, which continuously records a user’s screen to enable a time machine-like capability but for everything users do online. But it didn’t take long for the security-minded of us to realize the risks of this feature, which will reportedly be turned on by default. Do you want your PC, not to mention its AI assistant, watching and recording everything you do?
