AI is the New Blockchain

AI is at the top of the hype cycle and it feels unstoppable. Once upon a time blockchain was in the same place. In this episode, Tom Hollingsworth is joined by Evan Mintzer and Jody Lemoine. They tackle the surge behind AI development as well as the way the technology is portrayed in the industry. They compare how blockchain and AI are both solutions in search of a problem and how AI might better avoid the fate of DeFi. Also discussed is the potential way for AI-related companies to avoid issues with the AI bubble popping.

AI is being marketed as the solution for every problem you might have, known or unknown. While this does sound like the way to solve your difficult problems, it creates a problem in and of itself. Blockchain was also marketed as a solution to all your issues just a few years ago. In the IT space, OpenFlow was the same just a few years before that. Once the hype cycle died down and people realized these technologies were good for specific applications the market had already moved on to the next great magical solution. Users that had invested heavily in the previous hype cycle were left holding the bag.

AI is a too, just like any other. It’s not a panacea that fixes every issue. Adding it to a platform for dubious reasons or in the hope of creating additional value is short-sighted. AI won’t make everything it touches better without serious investment in time and effort to match the resources to the outputs. A company that is spending time to make sure AI has value to their customers will succeed. A company that is just tossing AI into their product to get additional funding is going to fail. This is doubly true for situations where adding AI to the solution creates more issues, such as data retention issues or security holes.

AI needs to be evaluated to be valuable to users. Don’t just blindly accept that AI is the one thing that we’ve been missing to have a utopia. Whether or not the billions of dollars we’ve invested in the infrastructure will pay off, remember that we’ve done things like this before. Given the track record of the average tech startup we will also be doing something like that again, and again.
