Announcements from VMware Explore | Gestalt IT Rundown: August 23, 2023

VMware just can’t stop talking about GenAI, which incorporates many different developments. The company is adding AI assistants to many products and is also introducing a new VMware Private AI offering with enabling generative AI processing on NVIDIA or open-source platforms for enterprise deployment. VMware is talking about security and data privacy while at the same time touting the performance and price benefits of on-premises GPUs.

VMware NSX is even more exciting now! NSX+ is the new as-a-service offering focusing specifically on application visibility, network detection and response, and HCX+ Workload Mobility. The goal of the service is provide functionality that modern enterprises at a monthly cost for OpEx budgeting purposes. The other big piece of the NSX announcements is NSX VPC, which is modeled of the virtual private cloud (VPC) networking capabilities in public clouds. 1:09 – CXL and CCIX Agreement Reached by CXL Consortium

The CCIX Consortuim has agreed to transfer the specifications and technology behind their group to the CXL Consortium. CCIX was one of the few remaining compeitors to CXL, primarily focusing on network processing and 4G/5G connectivity. CXL will offer membership to CCIX companies that are not already members.

4:09 – SUSE Goes Private

SUSE is going private after two years in the public spotlight. The majority shareholder, Marcel LUX III SARL, said that they will be delisting the Linux company from the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The move, which values SUSE at $16/share, is aimed at providing some flexiblity in the current space which is muddled thanks to the IBM Red Hat decision to change the way RHEL sources are provided. SUSE is part of the newly formed OpenELA project along with Oracle and CIQ.

6:43 – India Says No to Tech Imports

India has the largest population in the world, but they might soon have trouble getting their hands on laptops, smartphones, and servers. The country, which currently imports about $20 billion in electronic devices, announced on August 3 that it would require licenses to import the latest gadgets. There are more questions than answers about Modi government’s announcement, but could this cause real problems for tech companies?

11:01 – Terraform About to Be Terraforked?

Fresh off the discussion about the new BSL license adoption discussion from last week, we have our first hint of unrest in the HashiCorp ecosystem. A group of vendors who leverage Terraform for their business model have created OpenTF, a consortium looking to affect change in the new status quo. OpenTF is currently lobbying HashiCorp to choose to keep Terraform under the current non-BSL license. Should HashiCorp choose to move Terraform to the BSL license the OpenTF group has said they will fork the project and create a new open source version.

21:57 – VMware Enhances AWS Offering

VMware Cloud on AWS was enhanced at Explore including the new VMware Cloud on AWS: Advanced bundle, enhanced networking and security features, upcoming NSX+ services, availability of vSAN with Express Storage Architecture for greenfield deployments, and the introduction of VPC Peering Support for Amazon FSx, all aimed at improving the platform’s capabilities and offerings.

27:21 – VMware’s Client Solutions

Given the importance of work from home and hybrid workforces, it’s surprising that VMware doesn’t get more press for their offerings in this space. This week included enhanced digital employee experiences, secure endpoint management, and advanced workspace solutions. Digital Employee Experience simplifies remediation workflows, while Unified Endpoint Management & Security integrates Intel vPro and Workspace ONE UEM for efficient device management. VMware Horizon brings app management efficiency through App Volumes support, and Workspace ONE Unified Endpoint Management emphasizes autonomous workspaces and intelligent automation.


30:19 – VMware Leans Into Tanzu and Kubernetes

VMware made a lot of noise about Tanzu, their integrated Kubernetes offering. This included the app-centric VMware Tanzu Application Engine for multi-cloud deployment, enhanced multi-cloud cost forecasting, a developer portal, and improvements in multi-cloud management and Kubernetes operations. All this suggests that VMware remains dedicated to Tanzu and their application development focus.


34:02 – VMware Private 5G Network

VMware is jumping into the private 4G/5G space with Private Mobile Network. The backhaul is being provided initially through a partnership with Federated Wireless, who will be building out on-prem remote access network (RAN) infrastructure for customers that includes the latest technology, such as CBRS. VMware will provide the Private Mobile Network orchestration and management platform on top to integrate into existing IT environments. Private Mobile Network is an overlay that can work with a variety of RAN solutions in the future as well. The goal is to capture the growing mobile client market for enterprise knowledge workers. The service is expected to launch soon with no firm date mentioned in the release.


37:31 – VMware Edge Compute Stack

The Edge Compute Management Platform integrates Project Keswick features and more into a new orchestration module for edge computing, enabling deployment and provisioning of edge compute infrastructure and applications on a large scale through zero-touch provisioning. This platform integrates other edge services such as SD-WAN, security, network analytics, and Private 5G.
