Cohesity to Acquire Veritas Technologies | Gestalt IT Rundown: February 14, 2024

Cohesity is set to acquire the data protection assets of Veritas in a huge deal. Cohesity will be picking up the NetBackup portfolio as well as SaaS offering Alta. The move is seen as a huge bolster to Cohesity both in their cloud offerings as well as traditional on-prem enterprise back and data protection. The deal will merge the two companies into a $7 billion. The remaining parts of Veritas that aren’t purchased will be rebranded as DataCo.

NetApp and SpectraLogic are ready to bring Glacier-style storage to on-prem data centers. The announcement matches NetApp StorageGRID S3-based object storage with SpectraLogic leading archival tape technology. The goal is to provide a tier for StorageGRID that will allow large amounts of data to be stored for long periods of time without clogging up the object data store while also being faster than Amazon Glacier, the cloud solution that does the very same thing.

4:33 – Flipper Zero is Canada’s Number One Enemy

Just when you thought it was safe to unlock your car, open source strikes again! The Canadian government announced last week that they are banning the import of the Flipper Zero, a popular open source hardware platform that can clone and broadcast radio signals. The Flipper Zero has been marketed as a hobbiest device since its introduction and people have been using them in all sorts of fun ways, such as turning off loud TVs at the bar or even opening garage doors. The news comes as a surprise to enthusiasts, as the attacks described by the Canadian government require very specific conditions or addtional hardware modifications that aren’t possible with the Flipper Zero.

9:18 – AI Continues to Shape Google Gemini

Google is starting to roll out their flagship Gemini LLM into their product lineup. The hot new multimodal algorithm is positioned as being able to understand nuance in information that it analyzes and can take on more complicated subjects like physics. One of the biggest changes is that Google Bard is now rebranded at Gemini and will only be available through a $20/month subscription. Analysts believe that integrating Gemini Advanced into the Google platform suite will help users with innovation and creativity.

13:42 – Free VMware vSphere Hypervisor Ended by Broadcom

ESXi free, we hardly knew ye. In a tersely worded knowledge base article, VMware by Broadcom announced the end of availabilty of the free version of the vSphere Hypervisor, more widely known as ESXi. The community is decidedly against this move, citing concens about the lack of options for home lab creation and software to allow for self-study on the platform. Others say the move has finally forced them to accept the changes and move off the industry-leading platform into something more modern such as Kubernetes or Proxmox.

Alcion has announced a new managed service provider partner program. The AI-drive SaaS backup platform is focused on Microsoft 365 and provides peace of mind to companies that have moved to the cloud but still need to know their data and files are safe and sound. Alcion’s AI pedigree allows MSPs to provide differentiated service offerings as well as full multi-tenancy support.
