Cybercriminals Gain Attention from International Criminal Courts | Gestalt IT Rundown: September 13, 2023

In an excellent article, Karim Khan of the International Criminal Court has started to make the case that cybercriminals should be subject to international law for their escapades. The current state of the world often sees these criminals go unpunished due to nation state backing or lack of jurisdiction. Khan says that we need to get tougher by ensuring these naer-do-wells can face justice for their crimes, especially when they impact so many people around the world.

CoreWeave is looking to make a sale. Specifically they’re selling a minority stake in the company to raise funds. The stake sale is around 10% equity and is valued somewhere between $5 billion and $8 billion. CoreWeave is backed by Nvidia and has been seeing massive growth thanks to generative AI workloads. CoreWeave offers a cloud platform specifically geared toward AI development.

4:10 – Enfabrica Enhancing GPU Usage in Datacenters

Networking chip startup Enfabrica has announced a new funding round of $125 million. Nvidia has also joined as a strategic investor. Enfabrica is looking to speed up network connectivity for AI development datacenters by combining CXL with RDMA. This means GPUs can pull data from multiple sources without waiting for the network to catch up, which should increase efficiency and allow for more processing as well as reduced costs.

7:14 – It’s MLPerf Benchmark Results Time!

MLPerf Inference 3.1 has a new front runner. Nvidia unleashed the Grace Hopper GH200 Superchip on the benchmark and let it go wild. On average, GH200 was about 9% faster than the competition. The combination of running a CPU and GPU on the same die seems to be paying off for Nvidia. There were also interesting results from Intel and some storage as well. 11:57 – Cybersecurity is to Blame for Ongoing Outages says MGM Resorts

MGM Resorts is smarting from a big hack that happened this week. Attackers were able to call in to the help desk and managed to convince one of the employees to grant them access. After that they were able to get into the gaming network, which shut down gaming machines across the properties in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. They also invaded the door lock system, taking control of some 46,000 hotel doors. The ALPHV group has taken responsibility for the attack.

14:42 – Thunderbolt 5 revealed by Intel

Intel announced the newest iteration of Thunderbolt this week. Thunderbolt 5. This version offers 80 Gbps of bi-directional throughput, with bursting capabilities up to 120 Gbps. Built on USB4 v2, this standard also have double the PCI Express data throughput and brings the standards supported to the latest versions.
