Microsoft’s Quantum Computing Breakthrough with Majorana 1 | The Gestalt IT Rundown: February 25, 2025

We’ve talked about quantum computing before but Microsoft created a quantum quake in the tech space last week. They announced a new quantum computer chip that took seventeen years to make. The Majorana-1 uses a brand new Topological Core technology that reduces error rates significantly and could create chips with as much as one million qubits of processing power per unit. Microsoft’s researchers reportedly created a new state of matter in the accompanying research paper published to Nature to help them create the method for increasing the power of the chip. This and more on The Rundown.

1:15 – Docker Pauses Pull Plans

Container company Docker recently announced a plan to significantly limit image pulling for users as well as a storage–based billing setup. Late last week the company walked those plans back due to comments from community members. Paid Docker customers will have unlimited image pull rights and authenticated users will get more access to images. The plan for storage-based billing will be reworked into a set of tools to help customers manage their storage better and reduce the overhead placed on Docker.

5:30 – Default Passwords Strike Again

It’s time to change the password for your luggage and your air shield. Security researcher Eric Daigle discovered that the Enterphone MESH door access system had a vulnerable default password that coule be exploited to remotely access door locks across the US and Canada. The company, which was acquired by Hirsch, has said they will not be patching the issue because the practice of default passwords was outdated. Daigle found 71 systems that were connected to the Internet with default passwords that could be exploited, which earned him credit in the CVE that was published.

19:37 – HP Ends 15 Minute Tech Support Wait Time

You’re probably tired of waiting on hold for support by now. Last week, HP Inc announced plans to implement a mandatory 15-minute minimum wait for phone tech support. The stated reason was to encourage customers to use other forms of support, including online knowledge bases and forums instead of the expensive phone call centers. The plan was met with universal derision by the community and after a few days HP Inc walked back their plans to implement the increased timer.
