NVIDIA GTC event was the big story last week, both on the Rundown and in the tech industry generally. NVIDIA is clearly the company to beat in AI and HPC and this has the entire industry on its toes. Every company in tech is emphasizing their partnership and joint offerings with NVIDIA. But there’s a reaction from their competitors, too, with Google, Qualcomm, and Intel announcing their intent to undermine NVIDIA’s dominance.
1:08 – New RISC-V Devices Revealed at KubeCon by Scaleway
Scaleway showed off their new RISC-V offerings during KubeCon 2024 last week in Paris. The company is providing servers for 16 euros a month that include a modest TH1520 RISC-V CPU with 16 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Scaleway says they’re providing a way for new entrants to use RISC-V without the need to build the architecture from the ground up. Since this was at KubeCon, you can be asssured that the units are fully capable of running containerized workloads.

4:21 – FCC Increases Broadband Benchmark
The FCC has changed their requirements for what constitutes a broadband connection in the US. The guidelines now state that a connection must be 100 megabits down and 20 megabits up to be considered broadband by the FCC. The old rules had 25 down and 3 up as the minimum. The changes follow a 2021 Congressional report that stated anyone without access to the faster speeds was considered “underserved” by ISPs. The FCC noted that most providers are offering at least 100 megabits down today as many applications need that much bandwidth for proper operation.

11:10 – SIOS Lifekeeper for HA
SIOS is working on making HA easier for everyone. Their newest update for their LIfekeeper solution is aimed at applications running on Linux systems. The difference is that Lifekeeper takes care of the complex tasks of building a server cluster and monitoring the state so that if a member goes down the switchover is seamless. Lifekeeper is looking to build a universal high availability solution according to Futurum Group analyst Krista Macomber, and that shows in the fact that the dashboard can be accessed from anywhere, including a mobile phone. Stephen, you had a chance to talk to SIOS about this.

18:57 – AMD and Intel Chips Blocked by China
Chinese authorities this week began enforcing new guidelines on the chips that are allowed to be used in government servers and desktop computers. The new rules do not allow for Intel or AMD processors to be used and also disallows the use of Microsoft Windows as an operating system. Instead, officials are directed to purchase “safe and reliable” alternatives of Chinese origin. The rules, first proposed back in December, are seen as a response to the continued US embargo on advanced semiconductor manufacturing technologies.
