VMware’s annual conference is taking place in San Francisco this week, and Stephen Foskett is on-site to cover the event for Gestalt IT. It’s been a tumultuous event, the first from VMware since the pandemic, and it’s returning with a new name and theme. VMware Explore is different from VMworld in many ways, not least for the focus on multi-cloud management and entierprise IT developers, but we’re also trying to see the future, since the company will soon be purchased by Broadcom. Along with vSphere 8, which integrates Project Monterey, we’re seeing a beefed-up Tanzu and a new reporting suite called Aria.
0:47 | Tintri Embraces Public Cloud
DDN Tintri is looking to the cloud. News this week from the company unveiled the new Virtual Series platforms which utilized a software-only approach. Previously the only way to use DDN Tintri’s VMstore software was to buy a hardware appliance. The new Virtual Series appears to be a combination of the VMstore software along with the TxOS software that ran the appliance. This combination provides a suite of features and is aimed at offering them in a cloud environment. The release of these capabilities is expected to roll out over the course of the next year. Stephen, is this move going to help DDN Tintri?

3:40 | LastPass Breached
Password managment tool LastPass is in a bit of a pickle this week. It was announced that they detected strage activity in their dev environment. After investigating they realized that someone compromised a developer account and was able to make off with the source code and other proprietary information. Per reporting from LastPass the attackers were unable to see any customer data and did not gain access to any of the encrypted password vaults. That may come as small comfort because the source code theft means that attackers can now start probing for vulnerabilities. Tom, what does LastPass do next?

7:12 | Memory Expansion Module for CXL
Samsung has finally debuted a CXL memory expansion module. You may recall that they had already showed the world a prototype version of this module last year but it was running on the slower PCI-Express 3.0 standard. The new module is running PCI-Express 5.0 and provides the kind of performance that CXL is looking for. Stephen, there’s a lot to unpack on this story. Why is this memory expander a big deal for the future of the data center?

11:39 | Atlassian BitBucket a Bit Leaky
There’s a hole in my bucket, dear Atlassian. A new CVE has been released that shows there is a command injection vulnerability in several API endpoints of the Bitbucket Server. Atlassian has fixed the vulnerabilities and issued new versions with the patches but the CVE still ranks as a 9.9/10. The exploit hasn’t been seen in the wild yet but can be triggered by anyone with public access to a repository or read access to a private one. Tom is this something that people really need to be on top of before the bucket is empty?

14:13 | VMware Brings NetApp to AWS for Enterprise Cloud Workloads
VMware and NetApp jointly announced a solution for enterprises using public cloud to run conventional virtualized workloads. VMware Cloud on AWS not allows customers to use Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP as a datastore option to vSAN. NetApp explored this at our Tech Field Day Extra session, and that video is now posted.
