The primary driver for organizations to move to a new technology is often cost savings. If a technology is doing an adequate job of meeting needs then replacing that technology often must have some kind of justification. Faster speeds and newer technology are often not quantifiable enough to make the justification to decision makers about switching. Costs savings can be measured and adjusted to make something make sense. But what if that cost savings can bring you more than you’d ever hoped for?
Pinching Pennies
Don’t dismiss the draw of costs savings out of hand. At the recent ONUG conference, Agilent Technologies showcased how switching their legacy MPLS WAN to a solution including Viptela reduced their overall WAN costs by over 80%! It is very easy to look at the circuit costs and make an easy comparison. But when Agilent looked deeper and found smaller savings, like the costs of renting MPLS hardware from the provider, the amount of cost reduction shot up drastically.
In addition, those costs savings were also hiding additional benefits. Agilent was able to increase the bandwidth offered at remote sites more than double the MPLS offerings. It’s not often in the industry that you can save a ton of money and increase the performance of a link. It was like finding money in the pocket of a new coat.
Many Roads To Travel
Additionally, the hidden benefits of the Viptela solution kept coming for Agilent. They found that implementing an SD-WAN architecture diversified their WAN circuits. When using MPLS, all the links belong to the same provider. A problem somewhere in the MPLS cloud can cause huge issues for all connected sites. When SD-WAN is used with cheaper non-MPLS lines, any issues with MPLS can be overcome.
In a case study example, Agilent discussed how an MPLS outage in March of this year was overcome by having the Viptela solution reroute critical voice and data traffic from the down MPLS circuit to a back ISP. The traffic remained secure because Viptela builds a full mesh of IPSec protected tunnels between the sites. The new provider link was able to keep Agilent’s operations running smoothly while the issue was sorted out.
Going For The Gold
One of the last hidden benefits of implementing Viptela was the ability to extend and expand the WAN once implementation was finalized. Instead of being forced to use whatever services the MPLS provider offered, Agilent could create their own solutions to meet new needs.
One of the solutions that Agilent is looking at rolling out in the second phase of their SD-WAN project is a WAN quality of service (QoS) solution for data and voice services. Now, with the control offered by Viptela, Agilent can provide more consistent performance for applications in their network with no additional costs incurred from providers services. With the ability to extend the network further than before, Agilent has transformed cost savings into a bounty of benefits.
