IBM owes $1.6 billion for BMC Poaching | Gestalt IT Rundown: June 8, 2022

IBM finally lost a court case this week and nows owes BMC $1.6 billion. Why? Well, the reasoning is that IBM stole one of BMC’s biggest customers – AT&T. IBM had been providing service on behalf of BMC for a number of years and had a very specific agreement that they wouldn’t try to convince BMC customers to go directly to IBM. In this particular case BMC says that IBM violated that agreement back in 2015. IBM countered by saying that this whole thing was AT&T’s decision and IBM in no way did anything to encourage it. The judge didn’t see it that way and now IBM is going to appeal this little fine. All this and more on this week’s Rundown. Head to gestaltit.com for show notes.

0:47 | Clumio Introduces Low-Cost Ransomware Recovery

If you’re looking to protect your backups and want to use a solution that keeps them out of AWS but won’t break the bank, Clumio might be what you’re looking for. Restoration of the data is slightly more expensive at $0.04/GB but if you’re in need of it to recovery from a ransomware attack you’re likely not going to worry about the cost. Jim, is this a good strategy by Clumio?

Speaking of Cloud, the market for networking in the cloud appears to be growing again. According to Dell’Oro group, datacenter switching grew 16% year-over-year in Q1. Still, analysts are expecting to see a bit of a slowdown through the rest of 2022 and perhaps a shift in focus to more R&D to get a jump on faster port speeds when the supply chain catches up. So, Tom … growth is good! Right?
