Nation State Actors Tap the Taps | The Gestalt IT Rundown: October 9, 2024

A big cyberattack attributed to groups backed by the Chinese government has telecom providers worried. In this new report, investigators have determined that the group, known as Salt Typhoon, has had months-long access into the network infrastructures of companies like AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies. That access includes visibility over the infrastructure used for lawful intercept, which is the Internet version of tapping a phone. Per the report, the Salt Typhoon hackers appeared to be engaged in a data collection mission, trying to obtain as much data as possible from US businesses as well as those that they do business with.

Samsung Electronics has started mass production of the industry’s first 1TB quad-level cell (QLC) 9th-generation V-NAND, designed to offer high-performance, high-capacity solutions for AI applications, consumer products, and enterprise SSDs. This new technology features a 286-layer structure, providing 86% higher density than previous generations, along with significant improvements in write performance, data retention, and reduced power consumption. Samsung aims to strengthen its leadership in the growing enterprise SSD market, particularly as demand for AI applications surges.

Information week had an interesting story about the security risks associated with dust and fluff accumulating inside servers in data centers. The danger seems to be more about overheated servers that shut down because their fans no longer move enough air to keep them cool.

Equinix and it’s joint venture partners, GIC and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, will build multiple datacenter campuses across the US. The datacenters will boost AI and cloud growth for Equinix customers in the US.

11:28 – Cisco Teams Up With Coreweave

Cisco is apparently looking to make an investment into CoreWeave. Fresh off a Series C funding round, CoreWeave is a popular company for cloud-based GPU clustering. Cisco is reported to be looking to invest and raise the valuation of CoreWeave to nearly $23 billion. Analysts are wondering if this is a chance for Cisco to influence the transition from Infiniband to Ethernet fabrics.

14:58 – Commercial WordPress Hosting Stoush

Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress, believes that WPEngine is profiting off the confusion between the WordPress brand and the WPEngine brand. WPEngine customers were briefly blocked from accessing the WordPress software distribution servers, preventing security updates to WPEngine based web sites. Access has been restored but Mullenweg still wants WPEngine to pay his company, Automattic millions of dollars for a license to the WordPress trademark.

Oscium is acquiring MetaGeek from Auvik. Specifically, Oscium is getting the MetaGeek brand along with the code for the MetaGeek tools like Chanalyzer and inSSIDer. Co-founder Brian Tuttle is returning to the company to lead software development. Tom, MetaGeek has presented at Field Day in the past.
