20TB hard disk drives are soon going to be forgotten because 30TB models are on their way. Top HDD manufacturers including Seagate and Western Digital are on track to roll out their own line ups of 30TB hard drives by 2024. Capacity increase has been an ask among hard drive users for several years now and a handful of companies have been working on it a while now. Recently, Toshiba, Seagate and WD together with their partners made announcements about their roadmaps to build 30TB HDDs.
While all these companies are headed for the same goal- to bring to the market the 30TB cousins of the 20TB HDDs, they are going about it pretty differently, in that they are using their own proprietary technologies to make that capacity increase happen. The 30TB model is likely to reduce costs by a wide margin at data centers.
Anton Shilov writing for Anand Tech discusses the technologies that these manufacturers are using and talks about their roadmaps in his article- “Destination 30TB: HDD Vendors Plan Different Routes to Hit Storage Milestone in 2023”. He writes:
In the recent months all three hard drive manufacturers — Seagate, Toshiba, and Western Digital — and some of their partners have outlined plans to ship 30TB HDDs already in 2023 ~ 2024 timeframe. Apparently, all of these companies plan to use different technologies to get to this milestone.
