Hyperconverged Infrastructure has mature to the point where most organizations view it not as a primary selling point, but as an implementation detail. Yet, as any good architect knows, details matter. Matt Leib has designed for many customers and wants to ensure that he is paying attention to the details that matter regardless of the architecture being use, be it HCI or otherwise.
NetApp HCI was never “hyperconverged infrastructure” in the classic sense, but that never mattered. HCI customers would be well-served by the product, and the company is marketing and developing it in a way that is consistent with what customers are coming to expect. As customers move to converged and cloud solutions, NetApp wants to make sure they can keep them in the fold.
Hyperconverged solutions are a hot topic right now. But is there a hyperconverged offering that can work for small offices? Paul Woodward Jr. takes a look at StorMagic SvSAN and puts it through its paces to find out how it can work for locations that need something that fits their style.
When a category becomes settled, a bit of tedium begins to set in. Room for innovation rapidly shrinks, and becomes more about efficiency and refinement than redefinition. That’s kind of how I felt the hyperconverged infrastructure market was settling into. There are still marked differences in price, features, and capability between the players. But the literal configuration of hardware seemed to be homogenized.
Datrium is trying to change the expectations of hyperconvergence. Instead, they are billing their concept as Open Convergence. This is their response to the traditional issue with HCI. Their basic format is to separate bulk storage from compute, flash, and networking.
I’m never going to have a home lab to test out the latest and greatest enterprise gear. If I had ever seriously considered it, it was put to bed when I saw Joshua Stenhouse’s setup. To say it’s impressive would be an understatement.
Scale Computing works within the HCI space, but instead of just refining how converged their solution is, they’re also rethinking the infrastructure as a whole. They designed their solution from the ground up to be an implementation of virtualization how you would want it to be, not just an extension of the current status quo.

Here are some predictions we’ve put together and gathered from within the industry for 2017. We’ve included some general technology, and more specific enterprise focused looks into 2017.
After looking at some of the announcements from AWS re:Invent, the most interesting was the AWS Snowmobile, an insane 100PB SAN on wheels. This seems like the ultimate in sneakernet, giving you a ton of throughput, but really slow latency. What if instead of offering a big pile of storage with bad latency, you could simply use your own storage, but distribute it with extremely low latency? ClearSky Data claims they can deliver this. I sat in on a product briefing to figure out how.
Kaleao is offering what they are referencing as a “true convergence” solution in their KMAX Server. I was naturally a little skeptical, the word convergence gets thrown around with abandon in enterprise IT, and KMAX sounds like a range of Kodak black and white film. But the more I read, the more I was interested.
