What do you think is the fundamental feature of storage? Is it performance, data integrity, or something completely different? Chin-Fah Heoh from Storage Gaga blog notes that during his medical downtime, none of the new storage technology announcements that he read touted data integrity as their winning feature.
While data integrity may seem like a no-brainer, and a given, that’s not always the case. Some companies have struggled to maintain data integrity in their storage systems, leading to data corruption disasters for customers. Why are we all just focussed on how fast storage works, and not the more important bit? It’s a mystery Heoh tackles in his blog.
Chin-Fah Heoh comments:
I have taken some downtime from my blog since late October. Part of my “hiatus” was my illness which had affected my right kidney but I am happy to announce that I am well again. During this period, I spent a lot of the time reading the loads of storage technologies announcements and their marketing calls and almost every single one of them touts Performance as if it is the single “sellable ” feature of the respective storage vendor.
