Aruba Atmosphere was the talk of the town and we’re here to cover the exciting announcements from the event. The wireless fans had lots to cheer about with a new update to Aruba Central that offers better visibility as well as integration with HPE GreenLake. Security experts loved seeing how the acquisition of Axis Security is providing new edge security capabilities. Of course, the Athonet acquisition to extend Private 5G capabilities was also on the tip of everyone’s tongue. This and more on the Rundown.

0:34 – Infoblox Uncovers Decoy Dog

Infoblox has released a threat report on a remote access trojan toolkit called “Decoy Dog” that utilized DNS command and control and went undetected for a year in various sectors across multiple regions. Infoblox’s Threat Intelligence Group discovered the toolkit and is collaborating with other security vendors and customers to disrupt its activities and secure global networks. The report emphasizes the importance of a robust DNS security strategy and highlights Infoblox’s ability to detect threats early in the threat lifecycle and provide customers with preemptive protection against emerging threats through its Suspicious domain feeds.

3:19 – Nutanix Disaggregating Nodes?

Peanut butter and jelly. Peas and carrots. Things that just go together, like Nutanix compute and storage. Until today, that is. Nutanix is now offering dedicated nodes for storage as well as for compute. This represents a huge shift away from the progenitor of the hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) and their assertion that having compute and storage together in the same box is the best solution. The announcement comes during Nutanix.NEXT where the company is touting additional ways to leverage their hybrid cloud solution for specific workload requirements. The company points out that the flexibility of having different instance types all managed by the same console is something competitors aren’t able to do today. Stephen, this is a pretty big move!

6:30 – MSI Leaks BootGuard Key

MSI was breached a couple of weeks ago and the group held some 1.5TB for ransom. Since you’re hearing about this story now you know that MSI didn’t pay the ransom. The attackers published the data publicly in retribution and some of the contents were pretty embarrassing. The Intel Bootguard firmware keys were found in the data dump, which means that anyone with access can now sign malicious firmware files to install on MSI devices with no warnings. According to researcher Alex Matrosov of Binarly, this leak also affects all OEM signing mechanisms within the Converged Security and Management Engine. Tom, is MSI in trouble here?

10:09 – Pure Says Hard Drives Done after 2028

Pure Storage VP of R&D Shawn Rosemarin is boldly claiming that hard disk drives will be extinct after 2028. The flash storage proponent is making this prediction based on the power consumption of the devices when compared to the costs of NAND flash. This follows in line with some of the new ESG initiatives that Pure has been discussing. Rosemarin says that Pure estimates that data centers use approximately 3% of the world’s power and that most of that consumption comes from spinning disks, so reducing those disks would lead to significant reductions in power usage on top of better performance. Stephen, should we start writing the requium for spnning rust?

14:10 – Cisco vEdge Certificate Expires

Cisco is facing some very angry customers today. The hardware certificate that controls vEdge connections to control devices expired yesterday. This means that the connections to vSmart and vManage will eventually fail, which means the device will lose connectivity and no longer forward traffic. At this time Cisco has no solution for the issues and users have reported multi-hour hold times when calling Cisco support. Tom, how can something like this happen?
