The lack of an object storage service in vCloud director is one many service providers have been attempting to overcome with mixed results. By partnering with Cloudian and offering a native, S3 compatible object storage service, VMware is helping to level the playing field for service providers that are attempting to offer compelling cloud and managed services to their customers.
Cloudian recently made an interesting move by scooping up Infinity Storage. This is more than a little curious. The big draw around Infinity Storage is that they provide file storage, whereas Cloudian has made it’s name as an object storage provider. Except that as we’ve covered, Cloudian now offers file services via HyperFile. So… why spend the money on the acquisition?
With HyperFile, Cloudian added the ability to address file and object in a single name space. With HyperStore 7, they now add multi-cloud into the mix.
Cloudian has traditionally offered cost-effective object storage. But their recently announced HyperFile solution adds file service to the mix. This rounds out their portfolio, and opens up new customers for their solutions.
Gestalt IT has another cloud newsletter. In this week’s edition:

Plus a fun history of the ill-fated, but still occasionally relevant, PCMCIA slot!
What is data control? I thought it seemed like a pretty straight forward idea, but reading this piece by Justin Warren changed the way I conceived of it. I assumed that control meant that I could use my data however I wanted. But that is less about control and more about access and movement of data. Control subsumes these functions, but it also includes the ability to restrict that data.
Chris Evans of Architecting IT writes: Storage Field Day 7 (11-13 March 2015) proved to be yet another impressive and thought provoking event, with lots of new ideas demonstrating that the storage industry is one of the most innovative and competitive sections of the technology landscape. Over the next few weeks, I’ll deep dive into some […]
