We are excited to welcome Rocky Gregory as a delegate at the upcoming Mobility Field Day event in July! Rocky heads up Wireless for Nike and loves enterprise wireless deployments and the wireless security of implanted medical devices (including his own!). You can see more about Rocky on Twitter at @BionicRocky, on the Tech Field Day Website, or at his personal blog, http://bionicrocky.com. Without any further ado, let’s learn a little more about Rocky!
How did you get into technology and IT?
We got a TRS-80 when I was a kid. I figured out how to re-write a game my brother and I played so I would always win. It was all downhill from there.
What do you do now? Tell us a little about your current role.
I’m Global Director of Wireless for Nike. I am responsible for leading a crack team of wireless commandos and set process, procedure, SLAs, and standards for Nike’s global wireless footprint.
What are your biggest challenges currently?
Corporate politics, budget.
Where do you see IT going in the next three to five years?
Automation, automation, and automation.
What was your first computer? What was great about it? What is your go-to computer now?
TRS-80 Color Computer 2 was my first. My go-to now is an Intel Macbook because Mac has all the wireless tools and I use an Intel-based one because they are broken on the M1s.
How do you manage your work/life balance?
I set pretty strict time around when work stops and life begins. That can be challenging while working from home, so I try to keep work in my home office, and life in the rest of the house.
If you weren’t working in IT, what would you be doing instead?
I have no other marketable skills.
What do you do in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies?
Collect classic arcade machines, collect records, restore and ride Vespas.
What are you most excited about seeing at the event?
Getting to ask the vendors the hard questions that the community wants answers for.
What is the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
Finishing up a refresh for Nike’s world headquarters with 4,400 APs!
Who inspires you?
Elon Musk.
As a child, what did you want to do when you “grew up”?
A cop like my dad and grandpa.
What is your favorite thing about what you do?
The physics of wireless.
If you won the lottery and could retire, what would you do with your time?
Write about wireless, ride my Vespas, spend more time with my family.
Thank you for sharing, Rocky! We are excited to have you on board as a delegate and are looking forward to seeing you in action at Mobility Field Day!
Rocky will be attending July’s Mobility Field Day as a delegate, so be sure to tune in to see him in action!
